Frøy opts for newly developed fish pump for de-lousing vessel

4 May 2021 – Frøy has awarded PG Flow Solutions a contract to deliver the newly developed fish pump called PG-Tornado to a de-lousing vessel the shipowner is currently modifying.

“PG-Tornado elevates fish welfare to a different level. The pump has no moving parts that can injure the fish, and a lifting height that by a good margin is suitable for de-lousing vessels, wellboats and processing plants. The fact that Frøy chooses this pump in combination with the world’s largest de-lousing system is the best technology confirmation we could get,” says Steve Paulsen, CEO at PG Flow Solutions.

PG Flow Solutions will supply three of its recently developed PG-Tornado fish pumps to Frøy. The pumps will ensure optimal fish welfare and gentle transfer of fish. PG Flow Solutions will also supply a hydraulic drive unit and control system to operate the fish pumps.

The PG-HydroFlow and PG-Tornado pump systems will be installed on-deck and hooked up to the de-lousing system, which is being delivered by SkaMik.

PG Flow Solutions has not disclosed the value of the contract, but underlines that it is important to the company.

“The aquaculture industry places stronger demands on fish welfare, including gentle transfer of fish. Because it is good for the fish and makes sense financially for the shipowner and fish farmer. This is exactly what PG-Tornado contributes towards,” says Steve Paulsen.

The pump systems will be assembled and tested at PG Flow Solutions’ fabrication and test site at Sande in Vestfold, Norway.

PG-Tornado is developed and manufactured in a cooperation between PG Flow Solutions and Smartline AS from Stokmarknes, Norway. The pump is the brainchild of Roy-Arne Breivik and Ben-Tommy Eriksen.

The PG-Tornado pumps and the additional equipment from PG Flow Solutions will be utilised on board a high-capacity de-lousing vessel that is currently undergoing modifications. The vessel was previously a 70-metre long supply vessel (MPSV).

“In fact, in 2005 we delivered various engine room pumps and plate heat exchangers to the vessel, which is now named ‘Frøy Challenger’. Now we will deliver fish pump technologies to the vessel. Both the vessel and PG Flow Solutions are good examples of a successful green transition,” adds Steve Paulsen.

PG Flow Solutions provides proprietary solutions, systems and products for companies within aquaculture, maritime industries, energy sectors and land-based process industries. The company’s headquarter and manufacturing facility is located in Sande, Vestfold, Norway.
